Rhondda Cynon Taf has delivered improvements to a car park near Pontyclun Rugby Club, helping to meet parking demand locally thanks to significant funding from the Welsh Government and #RCTinvest.
The car park off Llantrisant Road in Pontyclun, between the Windsor Arms Hotel and the railway line, has received 14 additional parking spaces. The £150,000 scheme has been substantially completed – including works to re-surface the entire car park and the installation of new street lighting. Footway works are nearing completion while new signage will be installed shortly.
The scheme was funded thanks to a £113,000 grant from the Welsh Government’s Local Transport Fund, while the Local Authority, through #RCTinvest, contributed the remaining funding. The works have provided more parking spaces to help meet demand for the railway station nearby.

The scheme has therefore increased access to local train services, and helped relieve pressure for parking in this busy area of Pontyclun – benefitting visitors to the retail area and local businesses. The Council will continue to investigate the potential for further funding to create more parking for local rail users.
Works began on site in March 2018, and the car park has re-opened following a necessary closure to carry out the scheme. Works to improve the car park’s access from Llantrisant Road have also been completed. The works followed the Council’s purchase of the former public toilets, located near the car park, from Pontyclun Community Council. The toilet block was then demolished to allow the car park improvements to take place.
Councillor Andrew Morgan, Leader of Rhondda Cynon Taf Council and Cabinet Member with responsibility for Highways, said:
“This £150,000 scheme in Pontyclun is now substantially complete – following the re-surfacing of the car park, the installation of new street lighting, access improvements and the provision of 14 new car park spaces.
“Through #RCTinvest, the Council continues to significantly invest in its Highways as a priority area, which is making a difference in our communities. During 2017/18, £20m was invested in Highways and Transportation schemes – and this is followed by the Highways Capital Programme for 2018/19, which will further invest £23.6m in the service area over the next 12 months.
“The Council also continues to secure important external funding to complement its own Highways investment – and the Welsh Government’s significant support for the scheme in Pontyclun is welcomed. The scheme has helped meet the significant demand for parking in the local community, which serves the railway station nearby and a number of local businesses.
“The works in Pontyclun will be finished shortly, with the completion of the outstanding footway and signage works. The car park has now re-opened and motorists are already taking advantage of the improved parking provision.”
