Charities urged to sign up to food scheme

Wales’ largest food redistribution charity is expanding its reach in Swansea and is inviting local charities whose service users could benefit from nutritious surplus food to attend a Meet & Greet event.

FareShare Cymru is part of the FareShare network of regional centres across the UK and works with the food industry to redistribute excess food, which would otherwise go to waste, to people in need via its network of charity members. Projects receiving surplus food from FareShare Cymru include children’s clubs, homeless shelters and lunch clubs for older and disabled people.

After expanding its delivery routes, the charity is growing its reach in Swansea and the surrounding area.  They are recruiting local charitable projects that use food and could benefit from taking advantage of good quality surplus food –  – just the same  as can be found in shops.

Charities and community groups in the area are encouraged to attend FareShare Cymru’s free Charity Meet & Greet on Tuesday, February 25, from 2pm at the Environment Centre in Pier Street. The event runs until 6pm but guests can drop in at any time.

Guests will be able to find out about the various benefits including cost-savings and the diversity of food, by chatting with FareShare Cymru Assistant Project Manager Katie Padfield as well as Community Coordinator for FareShare Go – a free, in-store only surplus food service for charities – Rhiannon Edwards.

FareShare is the largest charity of its kind in the UK and works with over 500 food partners across the whole supply chain to source surplus food. Food received is then redistributed to almost 11,000 community groups and charities across the UK. Over 2019 in Wales alone, FareShare helped to feed over 11,000 vulnerable people each week, with charities receiving food including homeless hostels, women’s refuges, school breakfast clubs and drug and rehabilitation centres.

Sarah Germain, manager of FareShare Cymru, said: “FareShare does a great job of helping those experiencing food insecurity in our communities.

“Last year saw our busiest year yet, providing food to over 100 charities and community groups across Wales – and whilst we are grateful we were able to help feed more vulnerable people each week, the figures clearly demonstrate a very real need for our support.

“With recent investment in infrastructure, FareShare Cymru is in a strong position to help feed more people than ever before.

“The cost of signing up to FareShare is minimal, representing significant savings for charities. So if you run or know of a local charity or community group which could benefit from nutritious surplus food, please do contact us and attend our Meet & Greet. We’re eager to help as many as we can.”
