Welsh chamber-folk pioneers VRï to play Cardiff

Welsh chamber-folk pioneers VRï will bring their take on Welsh traditional music to audiences in Cardiff when they play St. John’s Church in Canton on Saturday, 28 March.

The trio’s mission statement is to provide an art music voice in the rapidly expanding world of traditional music in Wales, whilst also drawing particular influence from chapel culture, and its interesting relationship with Welsh traditional music.

Acclaimed musicians Patrick Rimes, Jordan Price Williams and Aneirin Jones make up VRï, who formed in the summer of 2016 to explore the possibilities of a ‘chamber-folk’ style of playing Welsh music.

With all three members previously established with bands on the traditional music circuit (Calan, Elfen, NoGood Boyo), they have approached their shared repertoire of tunes and songs with the sensibilities of chamber music.

The result is a sound which is simultaneously sophisticated and raucous. Their playing maintains all the energy and integrity of the pub sessions where they first honed their skills. Cardiff audiences will have the chance to get up close with this energetic performance this March.

Jordan Price Williams from VRï said: “We see our music as an opportunity to bring some of the more obscure hymn tunes back into the ‘folk’ domain, as well as nodding to the importance of Welsh chapel tradition.

“We can’t wait to play Cardiff live this spring and look forward to entertaining audiences at St. John’s Church on Saturday, 28 March. It’s going to be a great gig – we’ll see you there!”

Catch VRï at St. John’s Church, Canton in Cardiff on Saturday, 28 March. Tickets: www.wegottickets.com/event/490088
