St Cenydd Community School and leisure centre has received a brand new 3G – multiuse sporting pitch as a part of a number of pitch upgrades currently ongoing across Caerphilly.

The pitch has been converted from the previous Artificial Turf Pitch (ATP) to the new 3G style pitch that is more user friendly and will provide a key strategic facility for the community.

The £5m Place for Sport fund was allocated by Welsh Government to Sport Wales in 2019 to award grants that could improve, protect or create new sports facilities in Wales. Funding was awarded to over 150 projects across the country.

Commenting on the fund’s impact, Sport Wales Chief Executive Sarah Powell said: “Having access to high quality sports facilities is a must if we want to make Wales a more active and successful nation, so we were very pleased to be able to support this project. As we look to the future and to a recovery from this pandemic, community facilities will play a vital role in enabling people to return to sport safely.”

Cllr Ross Whiting, the Cabinet Member for Learning and Achievement commented:

“The upgraded 3G pitch at St Cenydd Community School and leisure centre will provide a facility for pupils, leisure centre users and the wider community to utilise for many years to come. I would like to thank Sport Wales for providing the funds for this fantastic project.

“The new facility will provide more opportunities for active living to help us achieve our mission of getting more people, more active – more often.”

The new facility will provide local sports clubs with the opportunity to play and train all year around. The multi-use pitch can be used in all weather and is utilised by a number of different sports including football and rugby.
