A Welsh language introduction leaflet aimed at welcoming people who move to Powys from outside of Wales has been launched at one of Europe’s biggest youth festivals, the county council has announced. Powys County Council launched the leaflet at the Maldwyn stand during last week’s Urdd Eisteddfod, which was held in Llandovery in Carmarthenshire. The leaflet offers an introduction to the Welsh language including some simple phrases and a guide to understanding local place names. It also highlights the many benefits of Welsh-medium education. The Welsh Government has published new requirements for the NHS in Wales to improve diabetes care and better support people to manage their condition. Diabetes affects around 7% of people in Wales and the Quality Statement for Diabetes sets out the key service priorities and national expectations for the development of better diabetes care. A former Welsh firefighter has spoken of the “damaging impact” on his life after suffering career-ending back injuries in an incident while attending a mountain fire in North Wales. Peter Roberts, 60, from Conwy, North Wales, has secured £180,000 in compensation after turning to his union, the FBU, and the national law firm Thompsons Solicitors to make a legal claim. The incident occurred in August 2018 while Mr Roberts attended a fire on Llantysilio Mountain.
