Work on a building project that will transform education for pupils with additional learning needs in Powys will begin next month, the county council has announced. Powys County Council and its contractor Wynne Construction will start to build the new replacement building for Ysgol Cedewain in Newtown in July. The project can now proceed after the Welsh Government, who will fund 75% of the project costs under its Sustainable Communities for Learning Programme, approved the council’s Full Business Case.  The remaining 25% will be funded by the council. The Welsh Government has today launched its Basic Income pilot scheme. From 1 July 2022, more than 500 people leaving care in Wales will be offered £1600 each month (before tax) for two years to support them as they make the transition to adult life. Launched by First Minister Mark Drakeford, it is hoped the pilot will set care leavers on a path to live healthy, happy and fulfilling lives. Unpaid carers in south Wales are being urged to apply for a £500 payment to help with the increased cost of caring during the cost-of living-crisis. To date 78% of eligible carers in south Wales have applied with over 16,400 claims paid to unpaid carers in the area. Ministers are calling on those remaining unpaid carers to come forward. Unpaid carers who were receiving Carer’s Allowance on March 31st this year must register with their local authority by July 15th 2022 to receive the payment. Following 13 months of essential conservation and development work, Cadw announced last week (23 June) that a Grade II listed barn on the site of Tretower Court and Castle has been brought back into public use.
