IT was snip and tuck but talented students managed to complete a stunning countertop in time for the opening of a popular Wrexham barbershop. Learners from Coleg Cambria’s Bersham Road site constructed the wooden piece for Matt and Kat Whitfield, owners of Holdfast Barbers in Ty Pawb, Market Street. As part of the Caru Cymru initiative, Keep Wales Tidy is launching the Litter Free Zone campaign in January, designed to encourage businesses to keep their communities litter-free and to raise public awareness. The initiative has been funded by the Welsh Government Rural Communities, Rural Development Programme 2014-2020, which is funded by the European Agricultural Fund for Rural Development and the Welsh Government. Future Welsh pop stars are being given the chance to show off their song writing talents for a school pop competition launched for Welsh Language Music Day – Dydd Miwsig Cymru. Primary school children can take part in Ysgol Pop, a competition which asks individuals or groups to write the verse and chorus of a pop song using as much Welsh as possible. A new, Welsh Government funded project working with young people in Newtown to explore issues around climate change has been launched this week. The One Planet Generation Project is being co-ordinated by Open Newtown, an independent development trust and social enterprise which manages 130 acres of green spaces in Newtown. The two-year project has already started working with young people in developing ideas on how people can reduce their environmental impact. A world-wide study of the impacts of bottom trawling has found that seabeds are in good health where trawl fisheries are sustainably managed. The first study of its kind, by Bangor University with collaborating research institutes, published this week in Proceedings of the National Academy of Science (PNAS w/c 3.1.22) builds on recent international collaboration. It brings together data from 24 large marine regions around the world to establish a relationship between distribution and intensity of trawling activities and the health of seafloor communities.
