The former multi use games area (MUGA) at Crescent Road, Rhyl has recently been transformed into a functional and attractive Green Open Space on a busy street in West Rhyl. During a twelve-month period, Contractors, Countryside Services and Keep Wales Tidy staff worked together to create the green space and site owners Countryside Services will continue to maintain the evolving site. Work is due to start on a drainage scheme at St Catherine’s Close, Melyn, Neath, which aims to reduce the flood risk to the local community. With funding from the Welsh Government, the flood alleviation scheme, developed by Amey Consulting on behalf of Neath Port Talbot Council’s Highways Drainage Department, will involve the repair and reconstruction of the local Cryddan Brook Intake. The finished scheme will not only reduce the risk of flooding but will improve the council’s access making it easier to carry out future maintenance. The Chief Medical Officer for Wales, Dr Frank Atherton is appealing to pregnant women to accept their COVID-19 vaccine when offered. This follows the rise in the number of unvaccinated pregnant women being admitted to hospital with COVID-19 who are experiencing serious illness. The Royal College of Obstetrics and Gynaecology (RCOG) and the Royal College of Midwives (RCM) both recommend vaccination as one of the best defences against severe infection. The busy summer for Wales’ Visitor Economy has shown the crucial importance of tourism infrastructure in delivering a quality experience for visitors. To help organisations plan ahead for future years, Brilliant Basics is a new Wales wide fund supporting public, third sector and not for profit organisations to deliver basic small scale tourism infrastructure improvements. 26 projects have been successful in their funding applications for the £2.4 million fund for 2021-2022. With six months to go before a new law ending the physical punishment of children in Wales comes into force, more than £2.9m is being invested in parenting support. The Children (Abolition of Defence of Reasonable Punishment) (Wales) Act 2020 gives children the same protection from assault as adults by removing an archaic 160-year-old legal defence. The new law will apply to everybody in Wales, including visitors, from 21 March 2022. All types of physical punishment, such as smacking, hitting, slapping and shaking, will be illegal.
