Two well prepared teams of chefs will be flying the Welsh flag as they take on the best in the world at the prestigious IKA Culinary Olympics in Stuttgart next month. The Oaks, a purpose-built 73-bedroom home, has started taking its first residents. Among them is 92-year-old Margaret ‘Peggy’ Phillips who spent all her life in Newtown before having to move to a care home in Welshpool a year ago. Peggy has now returned to her home town and become the first resident at The Oaks. A workshop taking place in Swansea on January 21 aims to involve local organisations, businesses and residents in creating a clear brand and identity for the South West Wales region. On Friday 10 January 2020 at 18.41 New Quay RNLI’s Mersey class lifeboat,the Frank and Lena Clifford of Stourbridge was paged to assist a 16.5m commercial fishing vessel, approximately 17 miles north west of New Quay, in strong winds of force 6-8, rising to severe gale force 9 for a time. In worsening weather conditions, the 100 ton whelker, with six persons on board, had suffered steering failure and was in need of assistance. A Second World War Veteran who served in the ‘Forgotten Army’ in the Far East celebrated his 100th birthday in Cartref Tregerddan, Bow Street on 11 January. Mr Walford Hughes MBE – who now lives in Cartref Tregerddan – took part in many Second World War campaigns including in Burma in the Far East. Never forgetting what he and his comrades went through in Burma, Mr Hughes became the National Secretary of the Burma Star Association sometime after the war. Cardiff Bus is launching a new service to Goitre Fach and Rhydlafar  from this month. The operator is launching its new 62 service, which will run between both areas and the city centre, from January 27th. The new service, which will operate from Monday to Saturday, will enable people to travel between the city centre, Llandaff, Danescourt, Goitre Fach and Rhydlafar.
