The UK’s leading youth cricket and disability sports charity, the Lord’s Taverners, is delivering a free community cricket programme called ‘Wicketz’ in Cardiff for young people aged 8-12 which uses cricket as a vehicle for social change. Wicketz encourages young people to take part in cricket and enjoy physical activity regardless of their background, circumstances or ability, while promoting positive life choices. A report will be considered by the local authority’s Cabinet Members when they meet next Thursday, January 24. The report recommends that the project is taken forward, after public engagement on the proposals was held towards the end of last year. The indicative proposal is for a new school with the same capacity as the current Lawrenny Avenue site. The owners of Guildford Crescent have agreed to postpone their plans for demolition following a meeting with Cardiff Council leader, Cllr Huw Thomas, to discuss a masterplan that the Council is developing for the area. Seven Cardiff schools have been awarded a grant of £12,500 to celebrate the career of Geraint Thomas and the key role that cycling club, the Maindy Flyers, played in his development. Detectives leading an investigation in to spates of high-value burglaries across Swansea, Neath and Port Talbot are appealing to trace the owners of some of the items recovered during a recent operation. Officers raided 16 addresses in Swansea on Tuesday as part of Operation Timmia, arresting six people on suspicion of conspiracy to commit burglary. All currently remain in custody. A seventh person was arrested the following day and has since been released on bail with stringent conditions.
