A driver who caused the tragic deaths of a couple aged in their 20s due to careless driving has been sentenced to 16 months, suspended for 12 months, at Swansea Crown Court. Alexander MacCallum, aged 28, of Llanreath in Pembroke Dock, was also banned from driving for 18 months and must complete 200 hours of unpaid work. He previously admitted to two counts of causing death by careless driving at the same court on 9 February this year. Funding worth just over £101,000 is now available to support community projects aimed at improving open spaces and play areas across Denbighshire. A total of £101,064.42 has been made available through commuted sums funding, with applications now open to a wide range of organisations. Eligible applicants include city, town and community councils, community and voluntary groups, charities, public sector organisations, amateur sports clubs and Denbighshire County Council itself. The First Minister Eluned Morgan was given a tour today of the new North Wales Surgical Centre in Llandudno, ahead of its opening in May. The new centre, at Llandudno Hospital, is a purpose-built orthopaedic facility funded by Welsh Government to help reduce waiting times across North Wales. The surgical hub will focus on high-volume, low-complexity operations. It will be able to carry out 1,900 operations, treating an extra 730 people every year. It includes 19 additional beds, alongside two new operating theatres and an eight-bed enhanced recovery and post-anaesthetic care unit. Last month South Wales Police found a cannabis farm in a property in Porth. This month, a man has been jailed. Kamber Murrja, 24, of Heston has been sentenced today (April 2) at Merthyr Tydfil Crown Court to 30 weeks in prison after police discovered 400 Cannabis plants within a building in Porth. This follows a guilty plea at Merthyr Magistrates Court on February 27. Officers were called to the address on February 25 by the property’s letting agency, who reported suspicious wiring outside the building and unpaid rent.
