Start-up businesses and aspiring entrepreneurs in Swansea soon have the chance to be inspired by the man behind a city centre axe-throwing venture.

Organised by Swansea Council, a free start-up enterprise club is taking place at Lumberjack Axe Throwing on Dillwyn Street from 10am till 11.30am on Tuesday October 24.

Matthew Griffin, the sole founder and director of the company, will be on hand to explain how passion can drive businesspeople to overcome obstacles and achieve goals.

The 26-year-old first set up Lumberjack Axe Throwing in 2019. The business also has a venue in Cardiff.

In 2020, Matthew won a Young Businessperson of the Year accolade at the Cardiff Business Awards.

He’s also recently launched a virtual reality room at Lumberjack Axe Throwing in Swansea, giving people the chance to use headsets to play a range of adventure and puzzle games.

The start-up enterprise club events are funded by the UK Government through the UK Shared Prosperity Fund.

Matthew, who’s also been a self-employed carpenter, said: “I first recognised the potential of an axe-throwing activity business when I saw it done in London and realised there was a gap in the market in South Wales.

“It’s an activity that such a diverse range of people can try and enjoy.

“There’s a lot of people in Swansea with great business ideas, so I look forward to meeting everyone in attendance at the start-up enterprise club and talking about my tips and business experiences so far.”

Cllr Robert Francis-Davies, Swansea Council’s Cabinet Member for Investment, Regeneration and Tourism, said: “Matthew is a great example for other aspiring businesspeople out there because he can explain first-hand how his passion and drive has led to a successful business.

“The enterprise club for start-up businesses and people with business ideas is just one of the ways our business support team is on hand to assist Swansea businesses.

“There’s also a regular power hour event with tips for businesspeople as well as a series of business grants we’ve made available through the UK Government’s UK Shared Prosperity Fund.”
