A new Educational Suite was officially opened today at the Household Waste and Recycling Centre (HWRC) at Roseheyworth, Abertillery. Situated inside the HWRC the educational centre is ideally located to allow school children and community groups to learn about recycling and what happens to the materials.

The Educational Suite was built with Welsh Government Circular Economy Funding. A further successful bid to ‘Keep Wales Tidy’ for a wildlife pack has also been used to develop the grounds for the benefit of local wildlife.

Already there has been interest from several of Blaenau Gwent Council’s partners to utilise the building for a range activities including a Nappy Library, Community meetings and the Repair Café.

The building incorporates many internal items that have been reclaimed which has helped reduce the cost. All the doors, furniture, TV, chairs, tables and lockers have been recycled from the Civic Centre before it was demolished. The charred wood effect on the outside of the building was achieved by reclaiming wood from the recycling site.

Councillor Helen Cunningham, Deputy Leader / Cabinet Member – Place & Environment said:
“The Education Centre will provide opportunities for schools and community groups across Blaenau Gwent to learn more about recycling, reuse and the circular economy. Education plays a vital role in promoting and increasing understanding of what happens to the waste we generate and encouraging recycling and re-use. We are pleased to have this facility for the benefit of the community and in responding to the climate and nature crises.”
