Caerphilly Fundraiser Reaches New Heights for Cancer Research Wales

Local fundraiser, Liz Davies, from Newbridge in Caerphilly, recently stepped out of her comfort zone and into the skies, to raise money for Cancer Research Wales.

Teacher, Liz, overcame her fear of heights, and swapped her running shoes for a parachute, in a skydiving challenge to raise vital funds for Cancer Research Wales.

Liz has been personally affected by cancer and decided to take part in this extreme activity to give something back to support the fight against cancer, after she had received amazing treatment for her illness at University Hospital Wales, Cardiff. Liz also wanted her skydive to be in memory of her granddad and dad who both passed away from bowel and lung cancer respectively.

Liz said: “Although am terrified of heights, I wanted to raise as much money as possible for a cause close to my heart, so knew I needed to set myself a challenge with a particular fear factor element to it; to get as many people as possible to sponsor and support me. My friends and family knew how much of a hurdle it was for me to overcome and make the jump for Cancer Research Wales, and I can safely say it was all worth the adrenaline rush in the end!”

“On the day of the skydive, the Aircraft team from Swansea, Reg and Tanya, were extremely supportive and made me feel as comfortable as possible, calming my nerves and encouraging me to enjoy the experience. I am so happy that I could support Cancer Research Wales while taking part in an experience I’ll never forget!”

In total, Liz raised an incredible £1554.68, with help from her very own ‘heroes’ – her family, friends and colleagues through coffee mornings and fitness classes. Liz’s fundraising activity doesn’t end there though; she has over 20 races booked in so far in 2018, including her first marathon, all in aid of Cancer Research Wales.

Katie Killoran, Fundraising Manager at Cancer Research Wales said: “We very much appreciate Liz Davies’ support and amazing fundraising efforts. We particularly admire her courage in her recent exhilarating challenge, and we’d like to say a huge thank you for her contribution to our charity.

“All the money Liz has raised will help us fund world-class research and make an enormous difference to the fight against cancer in Wales and worldwide. Cancer Research Wales’ scientists are among the very best in the world; every day they’re making great discoveries in the areas of early diagnosis, better treatments and preventatives of cancer for the benefit of cancer patients everywhere.”

“We are very fortunate to have the support of individual local fundraisers like Liz, along with our fundraising groups and committees – our very own ‘community heroes’, who raise money in their own time, and we are truly grateful for all their incredible efforts.

“Our supporters have many different reasons that inspire them to fundraise for our charity; some have had their lives impacted by cancer in some way or have had a personal experience with it and are motivated to support a charity that directs all its donations to the world-class research projects that are being run right here in Wales.

“The events that our community heroes organise throughout the year such as balls, dinners, coffee mornings and concerts, raise vital funds for our charity and we couldn’t do the work we do without them and consider them very much a part of our team. We’d like to invite more people to join us this year in becoming a community hero for Cancer Research Wales, whether you fancy flying through the air for charity, or holding a bake sale, every fundraising activity is important to us.”
