The Green Lady in Caerphilly has been named the UK’s Smartest Pub in the first week of The Marston’s Big Pub Quiz, winning £1,000 for Disability Can Do
Marston’s has teamed up with Paddy McGuinness on a search for the UK’s smartest pub. Marston’s Big Pub Quiz welcomed locals into over 200 pubs across the country to put their general knowledge to the test, for the first week on Thursday 1st May.
Locals at The Green Lady in Caerphilly came out on top, securing the title of this week’s Smartest Pub in the UK, with an average player score of 6,582.
As well as bragging rights, The Green Lady has also won a grant of up to £1,000 from the Marston’s Charitable Foundation, to support a local community project close to their hearts.
The chosen project is local charity Disability Can Do, which supports people who have a disability, impairment or long-term health issue, as well as their carers. Disability provides users with the tools they need to enrich their lives, including accessible welfare support, and local workplace and career opportunities.
Representatives from The Green Lady and Disability Can Do will be presented with the grant in person by Paddy McGuinness in June.
The top scorer at The Green Lady, Tom, also won himself a £50 voucher to get the drinks in.
From 8th May until 22nd May, weekly quizzes will continue to take place with one pub each week crowned as the Smartest Pub in the UK, also winning a grant and the chance to meet Paddy.
Players can take part in the rest of the quizzes for free. If they attended the first quiz, their cumulative score will be logged across the month if they take part every week. The individual quiz-goer with the highest overall score from across every quiz night will bag a £5,000 cash prize and the chance to join Paddy for the in-person congratulations.
The audio-based quiz will kick off each Thursday night at 8pm. Guests will be invited to log on via QR codes and play four rounds via their phones, with Paddy’s questions and a live compere being played for all to hear, via the pubs sound system.
While pub quizzes are usually played in teams, the Marston’s Big Pub Quiz is every man for themselves, giving the chance for groups to engage in some friendly competition to reach the highest score, add to the pub’s average score and claim ultimate bragging rights.
Marston’s Charitable Foundation is dedicated to giving back to the local communities in which the pubs operate, up and down the country, through match-funding pub teams’ fundraising efforts.
Voice of the Marston’s Big Pub Quiz, Paddy McGuinness, said: “I’m so excited to be working with Marston’s to find the smartest pub in the UK, and support some amazing community causes while we’re at it.
I’m very much looking forward to meeting the winners and community projects to congratulate them in person.
We want as many people as possible to head down to their local to join in each week and give the quiz a go. To the pub!”
Matthew Gassor, General Manager at The Green Lady, said: “We were delighted to see so many of our locals join us for the first quiz last Friday. We knew they were a brainy bunch, but we never expected to be crowned the first Smartest Pub in the UK! We’re going to be donating our grant to Disability Can Do, a fantastic local cause that’s close to all of our hearts here at The Green Lady.
“We can’t wait to meet Paddy and tell him all about the amazing work they’re doing. Until then, we’ll be trying to beat our own high score in the next three quizzes!”
The Marston’s Big Pub Quiz is taking place on 8th, 15th, and 22nd May at 8pm, in local pubs across the country.
