Cardiff’s City Hospice is calling on people in the local community to become a true Hospice Hero this new year by taking part in a challenge that helps support vital hospice care.
The charity is kicking off 2026 with a Firewalk and Walkathon, encouraging supporters to start their ‘new year, new me’ journeys with one of these exciting events. Funds raised will help City Hospice continue providing specialist home-based palliative care, counselling and bereavement support to patients with terminal or life-limiting illnesses and their families across the capital.
Returning this March, the Firewalk offers the ultimate display of bravery and community spirit in support of City Hospice. Sponsored by Keen Insurance, the event challenges participants to step outside of their comfort zones as they walk barefoot over glowing embers under the guidance of experienced firewalking instructors.
One of last year’s 15 Firewalk participants said: “The adrenaline, the cheers, the sense of achievement – the Firewalk pushed me far beyond my comfort zone. I walked away feeling proud, inspired and honoured to support City Hospice and the vital care they provide.”

The Walkathon returns on 21 March, inviting Hospice Heroes to take on an extraordinary 26-mile hike, equivalent to a marathon, from Cyfarthfa Castle to Castell Coch along the Taff Trail. Participants will have the opportunity to walk in memory of a loved one or to honour the dedication of those who provide care, all while joining a community of like-minded hikers united by a shared commitment to making an impact.
One of the 18 fundraisers who took part in last year’s challenge said: “There were times when my legs wanted to quit, but the cheers from fellow walkers and knowing we were fundraising for such an important cause kept me going. Walking in memory of someone I loved made each mile even more meaningful.”
Mac Smith, Fundraising and Events Manager at City Hospice, added: “The start of a new year is the perfect time to challenge yourself and a simple new year, new me resolution could make a real difference in our community. We hope to see even more people take on the Walkathon and Firewalk in 2026; we’d love to double the number of participants for both events.
“Whether you’re walking in memory of a loved one or taking on the Firewalk as a personal challenge, every step helps ensure patients and their families across the city receive the care and support they need.”
