A popular charity walk is returning for its fourth year this September, raising vital funds for patients with life limiting illnesses and their families.

City Hospice’s Sparkle Walk, hosted by Smooth Radio presenter Jason Harrold, will take place on 29 September and features a 10km route from Insole Court, Llandaff, to City Hospice, Whitchurch, and back.

The walk is suitable for families, friends, colleagues and anyone over the age of eight, though any persons under the age of 18 must be accompanied by an adult.

At the 5km mark, participants will be greeted with refreshments at City Hospice and will have the opportunity to leave a heartfelt message for a loved one in their memory garden. Walkers will also be able to keep their loved ones close and let their memories of them shine throughout the event by personalising their specially produced Sparkle Walk t-shirts.

Karen Vaughan will be among those taking part in this year’s Sparkle Walk, accompanied by her friends.

Karen said: “City Hospice’s Sparkle Walk is a very special event for myself and my family. This year marks an unbelievable five year milestone of losing a close friend and wonderful godfather to my daughter. The walk is an amazing and poignant way to remember a loved one and see them shine bright in the night sky.

“I will be rejoining and walking with a group of ladies who met four years ago during the first Sparkle Walk in 2019. It will be an emotional and moving evening, but I also know that by attending this incredible event, I will help raise very important funds for the hospice.”

Every pound raised by participants will go further thanks to The Waterloo Foundation, which has pledged to match fund every £1 raised up to a total of £15,000.

The funds raised by the Sparkle Walk will support the work of City Hospice, the only provider of home-based specialist palliative care in the capital. In addition to providing care and services including welfare advice and complementary therapies to patients with terminal or life limiting illnesses, the charity offers counselling and support services for their patients’ families.

Liz Booyse, Chief Executive at City Hospice, said: “We are looking forward to everyone coming together to sparkle through the streets of north Cardiff and let the memories of their loved ones shine as our Sparkle Walk returns for a fourth year.

“This is always an important date in the calendar for our community and brings so many people together in such a special way.”
