Young footballers in Splott have given a new 3G football pitch in the area their seal of approval.

Players from Splott Albion Football Club’s Under-10s girls team yesterday joined Cabinet Member for Housing and Communities, Cllr Lynda Thorne, Cabinet Member for Culture, Parks and Events, Cllr Jennifer Burke and local ward members at the official launch of the new facility, that has been delivered as part of the Council’s Neighbourhood Renewal Schemes Programme.

“It’s amazing!” was the verdict of the young players who are looking forward to playing their first match on the surface very soon.

TheNeighbourhood Renewal Schemesprogramme delivers regeneration projects all over the city ranging from new parks, street improvements to community safety improvements.

The scheme to deliver the pitch was proposed by local members to provide a year-round facility for use by the local community. Splott Albion FC will now manage the new synthetic all-weather surface which also boasts 5m high perimeter fencing, floodlighting and secure access. The pitch will be available to use at no cost for local junior football clubs, as well as for private hire by other sports teams.

Cabinet Member for Housing and Communities, Cllr Lynda Thorne, said: “This piece of land has been transformed from an under-used basketball play area to a fantastic, fit-for-purpose, all weather pitch that will be a real asset for local clubs in the community.

“It’s been fantastic to see the youngsters from Splott Albion FC using the pitch today.”

Cabinet Member for Culture, Parks and Events, Cllr Jennifer Burke, said: “We want to see as many people in Cardiff as possible enjoying the benefits of sport and physical activity and one way we can do that is by supporting local clubs, prioritising public space for them, and delivering more high quality facilities for them to use, like this new 3G pitch.”

New full size 3G pitches have been also developed with partners at Fitzalan High School, Leckwith Stadium and at the Cardiff University site in Llanrumney. There are also pitches at Cardiff West and Eastern High Schools with planned pitches in the pipeline at St Teilo’s High School as well as the new build accommodation for Cantonian High School, Willows High School, and Cathays High Schools. All pitches are available to the community to book.
