A Cardiff Met graduate has been impressing industry professionals at a series of high-profile art shows, including the British Art Fair at the world-famous Saatchi Gallery.

Annette Lindenberg, 24, originally from Vienna, studied Artist Designer Maker at Cardiff Metropolitan University. She has since gone on to showcase her unique work at several well-known art shows.

Most notably, Annette’s work of carved ceramics featured prominently at the 30thanniversary of the British Art Fair at the Saatchi Gallery last month. Her collection was positioned next to work by world-famous artists Dame Lucie Rie and Dame Barbara Hepworth.

Annette’s work also featured at New Designers in Islington, London, in June – this is a two-week exhibition of more than 3,000 new creative minds. Here, she unveiled her work to thousands of industry professionals. She has also exhibited at Art in Clay in Hatfield, Hertfordshire, a long-running exhibition of ceramics and pottery, visited by collectors and art lovers.

Annette‘s main technique is Kurinuki, which is a less well-known hand building technique that originates in Japan. Her work focuses on how our own experiences of what objects should look like influences how we interpret objects that are not connected to our own culture, especially when we try and make them ourselves.

Speaking about her success since graduating from university, Annette said:

“To see my work sit alongside that of Dame Lucie Rie and Dame Barbara Hepworth was absolutely incredible, as well as some of my favourite artists like Grayson Perry and Howard Hodgkin displayed on the ground floor. I didn’t really expect my first non-university related exhibition to be at Saatchi among people I had researched for various assignments over my degree and who I have admired for a long time.

“I actually came to the open day for the course at Cardiff Met after my grandmother encouraged me to look at an art course before I applied for either occupational therapy or psychology courses. I remember thinking it wouldn’t really be for me, but it actually ended up changing everything and I’m so pleased I chose this over the other routes.”

Dr Jon Pigott, Programme Director at Cardiff Metropolitan University, said: “It’s wonderful to see one of our graduates doing so well, and exhibiting amongst some of the world’s most prestigious artists.

“Annette’s collection of Japanese Tea Bowls show great sensitivity to materials and process and proved highly desirable in the Artist Designer Maker degree show this summer, where they were already selling fast. It’s no surprise her work has been so well received by industry professionals. We look forward to seeing what the future holds for Annette.”

Annette is now preparing for the London Art Fair in January. She is also hoping to travel and study ceramics, ideally in Japan.
