Cardiff reuse store to help save items from the skip

Cardiff Council and south Wales social enterprise Wastesavers Charitable Trust will officially open their reuse store (The Cabin) at the Lamby Way Recycling centre on Wednesday 13 October.

The store gives residents a chance to donate unwanted household items to the on-site charity shop rather than dump them in recycling skips.

All items donated are checked for safety and then made available to customers at “bargain prices”.

Councillor Michael Michael, Cabinet Member for Clean Streets, Environment and Recycling at Cardiff Council, said, “The council has been set very challenging recycling and composting targets by Welsh Government and we have to do everything we can to reduce, reuse and recycle as much of the city’s waste as possible.

“Reuse schemes are very important, as these schemes divert waste that sometimes can be recycled, or would otherwise be sent to an Energy Recovery Facility (incineration). By reducing and reusing as much waste as possible, the recycling rate for the city will increase and will help us strive towards the targets that have been set.”

In the first month of opening “The Cabin” has already saved more than 4,200 items from the skips.

Tom Belcher, Wastesavers Area Manager said: “If you’ve ever visited the recycling centre and been shocked by what people throw away you now have the chance to donate items to a charity shop rather than dump them in the skip.

“We’ve had an amazing response from people since opening. Customers constantly tell us they just cannot believe what people throw away.

“Residents also love the idea that their unwanted items have a chance of finding a new home rather than ending up in a skip.

“By setting up this shop we have created three new jobs and will be saving tons of items from being dumped. Everybody wins.”

The Cabin can be found at
    Household Waste Recycle Centre,
    Lamby Way,
    Cardiff,  CF3 2HP

Open seven days a week from 09.00 to 16.00.
