Cardiff taxi driver who raped a customer has been jailed for 11 years

Jakir Hussain

Jakir Hussain, 39, picked up his victim in Cardiff city centre and asked to use her bathroom when they arrived at her address.

After first locking her in his taxi and then following her into the house, he made his way into her bedroom where he raped her.

Hussain, from Grangetown, was arrested two weeks later when he was traced through CCTV.

He denied any sexual activity had taken place but later changed his story when his DNA was found at the scene.

Hussain then claimed everything which had taken place during the early hours of November 19, 2022, had been consensual.

But he was found guilty of rape following a trial and sentenced at Merthyr Tydfil Crown Court on Wednesday, June 14, 2023.

The court heard that the victim has not been able to sleep in her bedroom since this incident and has been suffering from flashbacks.

Detective Constable Rhys Powell said: “When the matter was reported to police fast track actions were undertaken to identify the driver and arrest him as soon as possible.

“Forensics were a key part of the investigation and were crucial in proving that sexual activity had taken place which forced Hussain to change his story and admit to having lied while being interviewed under caution.”

Hussain was sentenced to 11 years in prison. In addition to this he was made subject of a Sexual Harm Prevention Order and sex offender notification requirements for life. He was also made subject to a restraining order and barred from working as a taxi driver indefinitely.

“Despite being deeply traumatised by this incident, the victim bravely gave evidence in court and read her Victim Personal Statement,” added DC Powell.

“We hope the sentencing brings some sense of closure and allows her to regain her confidence and move on with her life.”
