Cardiff to install 17 secure bike hangars on residential streets

Seventeen new bike hangars will be installed across Cardiff to help residents securely park their bikes without having to bring them into their homes. The hangars, each providing space for six bikes while taking up only half a car parking bay, will be installed on residential streets in Canton, Riverside, Plasnewydd, Cathays and Splott later this month.

The scheme aims to make cycle parking more convenient and secure, so residents can access their bikes more easily, to encourage people to cycle, instead of using their private car. Following consultation with residents in August 2025, 17 locations were identified from an initial list of 50 potential sites. Further engagement took place between December 2024 and January 2025, allowing residents to raise questions and concerns, which have now been addressed.

A decision has been taken to proceed with the first phase of the scheme.

Cllr Dan De’Ath, Cabinet Member for Climate Change, Strategic Planning and Transport, said: “Many residents, particularly those living in terraced homes, have told us they struggle to store their bikes securely and often have to carry them through their homes.

“These new secure hangars will provide a safe, low-cost storage option and make it easier for people to use their bikes for everyday journeys. By providing the infrastructure for people to store their bikes safely, we are actively encouraging active travel for those people that are able to do so.”

Delivered in partnership with Cyclehoop, the scheme is designed to remove one of the main barriers to everyday cycling, secure parking, and encourage more residents to choose active travel for local trips and commuting.

Residents can apply for a space online at cyclehoop.rentals, where they can view nearby hangars, apply for a space or join a waiting list. Spaces cost £120 per year, with a £25 refundable key deposit, and include two maintenance visits each year. Successful applicants will be contacted within 48 hours if a space is available.

Cyclehoop Bikehangars are independently tested and hold Sold Secure Powered Cycle Diamond accreditation, the highest security rating available for cycle storage. Developed through more than a decade of real-world use, the units provide robust and secure on-street bike parking.

Anthony Lau, Founder and Design Director at Cyclehoop, said: “Secure cycle parking is one of the biggest enablers of everyday cycling, and we’re delighted to be working with Cardiff Council to deliver this scheme.

“By providing convenient, secure on-street parking, this programme will help more residents choose cycling for everyday journeys and support Cardiff’s ambitions for healthier, more sustainable neighbourhoods.”

Bikehangars will be installed on the following streets during March:

    • Canton: Theobald Road, Hanover Street, Denton Road, Syr David’s Avenue, Pembroke Road, Parry Street, Anglesey Street.
    • Riverside: Springfield Place and Kings Road.
    • Plasnewydd: Inverness Place, Moy Road, Glenroy Street, Arran Street and Lily Street
    • Cathays: Gwennyth Street and Monthermer Road
    • Splott: Adeline Street.
