Promising Christ College 1st XI player Beth Wood has won a prestigious Hockey Writers’ Club National Youth Award for her contributions to hockey for school, club and country.

Beth, who joined the College from Brecon High School in September 2017, played a key part in the U18 side that retained the Welsh National Championship title in March and is the current 1st XI team’s top scorer, with an incredible 24 goals in 10 matches (a school record)!

She also plays for one of Wales’ leading club sides at Cardiff Metropolitan University – Cardiff Met Hockey Club – and has also been a core member of the Wales U18 girls’ team for a number of years, competing in numerous European Championship tournaments. She recently saw her hard work and dedication further vindicated through selection to the Wales Senior Women’s squad for a test series against Scotland, becoming the first Christ College girl to achieve this status in the process.

Beth is, however, more than just a good hockey player with a strong skillset and although these qualities make her a tremendous asset to any team, it is her unbridled passion for the game and her dedication both to self-improvement and to developing others that stands her apart from most pupils her age.

Whether it is through her endless hours of practice, her complete commitment on the pitch, her forthright and accurate perceptions in a half-time huddle or the hours she puts in coaching junior players at Brecon Hockey Club, Beth is an outstanding role model and ambassador for the sport.

Dominic Phelps, Head of Hockey at Christ College Brecon said:

“Beth’s achievement is more than well-deserved, and Christ College is certainly grateful to have an athlete of her calibre as part of its flourishing hockey programme”.
