City Hospice to take over all community-based care in Cardiff

From April 1st, City Hospice will be providing its community-based palliative care across the whole of Cardiff, following a competitive tender process.

Previously, City Hospice cared for patients registered with 39 of the GP practices in Cardiff, but will now provide care to patients in the remaining 10 GP practices.

    What is changing?

At present, Marie Curie Community Specialist Palliative Care Team provide a service in the Vale of Glamorgan and part of East and South East Cardiff, and City Hospice provide the Specialist palliative Care service for the majority of Cardiff.

The change means that City Hospice will now cover the whole of Cardiff’s registered population and Marie Curie will cover only the Vale of Glamorgan population.

The Community Specialist Palliative Care Service is a 7 days service whereby Marie Curie and City Hospice work together to cover Out of Hours requirements, so the Cardiff and Vale University Health Board (UHB) is not anticipating any disruption to services for patients as a result of the change in service provision.

The change in provision will only affect a small part of the Cardiff population and Marie Curie and City Hospice have agreed to work together to ensure that patients transition seamlessly across services where necessary.

What does this mean for patients?

GP Practices in Cardiff (where service provision will change from Marie Curie to City Hospice) will be contacted over the next few weeks by City Hospice to advise of the change over and provide necessary information and advice.

All referrals from 1 April 2018 onwards should therefore be directed to City Hospice.
