The Vale of Glamorgan Council is pleased to announce the appointment of Kier as the preferred contractor for the highly anticipated new Ysgol Gymraeg Iolo Morganwg development.

This milestone marks the next phase in delivering a transformative new building for Ysgol Iolo Morganwg in Cowbridge – which will double the current pupil capacity from 210 to 420 places and offer nursery provision for up to 96 full-time equivalent (FTE) children.

The development will significantly expand Welsh-medium educational provision in the area, responding to increasing demand for Welsh-medium education in the Vale.

Cllr Rhiannon Birch, Cabinet Member for Education, Arts and the Welsh Language said: “We are delighted to move forward with Kier as our preferred construction partner on this ambitious new development.

“As a Council, we want to give each child the best possible start in life, and we are determined to ensure that we are constantly improving learning environments and resources for every learner in the Vale.

“This project reflects the Council’s long-term commitment to building inclusive and sustainable schools and forms a part of the ongoing Sustainable Communities for Learning Programme.

“It represents a major investment in both education and the future of the Welsh language in the Vale – as one of the only areas in Wales with growth in the numbers of Welsh-speakers.”

Ian Rees, Regional Director at Kier Construction Western & Wales, said: “We’re pleased to be the preferred contractor on this exciting project.

“We are incredibly proud of our significant presence in South Wales which has seen Kier deliver a number of education projects that have been transformational for both pupils and teachers.

“This is a great opportunity to further that legacy and to support Welsh-medium education in the region.”

The modern, purpose-built school will feature flexible, accessible learning spaces designed to support the educational needs of learners and provide a valuable resource for the thriving community in Cowbridge and the surrounding areas.

It will replace the current Victorian-era buildings, which present ongoing maintenance challenges and limited potential for expansion.
