Advanced notice is given for important resurfacing at the A4059 Quarter Mile Junction in Abercynon, over four days in the school Easter holiday (April 22-25). Through traffic on the A4059 will be maintained with two-way traffic lights, while the junction will be out of use for traffic heading to and from Abercynon.

The Council’s contractor will deliver the work, from 9am to 3pm on Tuesday, April 22, to Friday, April 25. It is scheduled in the school holiday, and outside of peak travel hours, to minimise disruption. All traffic management will be lifted outside of the hours of work.

The work will resurface the road around the junction, including renewing the road lining and the coloured marking sections at this location. The cats’ eyes will also be replaced at the junction. This activity will complement a package of works in the weeks ahead on the A4059, from Abercynon to Cwmbach, to renew the white lining on the road and replace all of the current cats’ eyes.

Temporary two-way traffic lights will be used on the A4059 at Quarter Mile Junction. This will ensure the main arterial route through the Cynon Valley remains open, while enabling the workforce to proceed in a safe environment.

A temporary road closure will be in place on the B4275, directly from Quarter Mile Junction to its junction from Park View. This means there will be no access to and from Abercynon via the junction during the work hours. Please find a map of the closure area and an alternative route here.

An alternative route for motorists is via the A4059, (A470) Abercynon Roundabout, the A472, Fiddler’s Elbow Roundabout, the A4054, and the B4275 – or this route in reverse order. Access will be maintained for emergency services and pedestrians, but will not be maintained to premises. Thanks to residents and road users in advance for your cooperation.

This resurfacing scheme was identified in the 2025/26 Highways Capital Programme, with an £80,000 allocation. The Programme provides a £6.94 million investment for carriageways – including 78 full resurfacing schemes.
