Plans to address long-standing problems caused by ground movement on the A469 between Pontlottyn and New Tredegar have been agreed by Cabinet.

Cabinet agreed to commit £20 million using a combination of repurposed budgets and borrowing, to fund the major engineering project.

Leader of Council, Cllr Jamie Pritchard said, “I’m pleased that in the few short weeks since becoming Leader of the Council, I have delivered on my promise to seek the funding needed to get this work done. We recognise the significant impact the road is having on residents and businesses in the Uper Rhymney Valley, so we are prioritising the delivery of this key scheme.”

The improvement works represent a complex and difficult engineering challenge and will require a long-term road closure, due to the scale, complexity and sequencing of the construction works.

A report will now be presented to full Council in January to support the borrowing, finalising the detailed designs and progressing land ownership negotiations. A contractor selection process can then take place over the coming months.

The two-year construction scheme is anticipated to start in late Autumn 2026.
