Bridgend County Borough Council remains committed to exploring all options available in relation to improving traffic in Pencoed despite the council’s recent bid to the UK Government’s Levelling Up Fund being turned down.
The local authority is now seeking alternative funding for the project which would see a new a new replacement bridge being built on Penprysg Road.
If funding is successfully secured, the new bridge would be able to accommodate two-way traffic and would lead to the eventual closure of Pencoed’s railway level crossing, which often causes congestion when the barriers are down.
In the meantime, plans are underway to trial changes to the timings of the existing traffic light system which will be closely monitored to see if there are any improvements to the flow of traffic over the bridge.
The results will then be analysed before a decision is made on whether to change the signal timings on a permanent basis or not.
While the decision from UK Government on our Levelling up bid was bitterly disappointing, we remain ambitious and committed to delivering on this project for the people of Pencoed.
We are currently asking for feedback about why the bid was rejected whilst continuing our efforts to secure new funding that will enable us to realise this ambition.
We are also actively exploring other options for traffic management improvement such as revised traffic light timings in consideration of concerns being brought to our attention.
