Caerphilly County Borough Council has announced that young people aged 14 and over can now access weights and resistance equipment in fitness suites across its leisure centres, as part of a continued commitment to supporting active lifestyles from an earlier age.

The change forms part of the Council’s wider Sport and Active Recreation Strategy, which focuses on removing barriers to participation, developing lifelong healthy habits and creating more opportunities for young people to be active in ways that suit them.

The updated age limit is supported through the Junior Active Plus membership, designed for young people aged 11 to 16. Priced at £12.05 per month by direct debit, the membership offers exceptional value for money, giving access to a wide range of activities across leisure centres.

Junior Active Plus members can enjoy:

    • Fitness suite access, including weights and resistance equipment for those aged 14+
    • Swimming
    • Exercise classes suitable for young people
    • Racquet sports and court bookings

All fitness suite access for juniors is delivered in a safe and supportive environment, with qualified staff on hand to provide guidance and ensure appropriate use of equipment.

By lowering the age for weight training, the Council aims to encourage confidence, strength development and positive relationships with physical activity during key developmental years. Children can access the fitness suite from 11 years old. They can access Cardio Vascular equipment and can be taught body weight exercises.

Councillor Chris Morgan, Cabinet Member for Leisure, said:

“Lowering the age for fitness suite access gives young people more opportunities to be active in ways that interest them. It supports the development of confidence and healthy habits at an earlier age, while ensuring access remains safe, supported and welcoming across our leisure centres.”
