Cwmbran-based Solar Buddies to feature on Channel 4’s Buy It Now programme

The inventors of Solar Buddies, Kelli Aspland and Laura Griffin, will feature on Channel 4’s Buy It Now programme on tonight (Friday 27th April) at 5.30pm.

Presented by Brian Conley, the series kicked off on 16th April and Solar Buddies will be featured on Friday’s programme.

Solar Buddies, the roll-on, child friendly, less-mess sunscreen applicator, was invented by Kelli and Laura, who were concerned about how their children protect themselves from the sun whilst at school. Between them, they have seven children.

Solar Buddies is refillable to 100ml, so is cabin baggage friendly and can be used multiple times. Its roller ball and sponge mechanism allows easy application with less mess and no waste, dispensing a controlled flow of sunscreen.

On Buy It Now, inventors have 90 seconds to pitch their product to an audience of real shoppers, who then press a button to turn on their light if they would buy the product, as presenter Brian Conley says to the shoppers on the show: “if you’re keen make it green”.

If any shopper turns on their light, the stage is turned around and the inventors are met by three major retailers who then decide if they would like to order the product for their stores.

Kelli said of the opportunity to appear on the show: “Buy It Now is the perfect opportunity for us to showcase the Solar Buddies business and introduce more people to sun safety at the same time.”

Laura added:

“Having just 90 seconds to pitch something you have worked so hard on is a big challenge and we spent hours rehearsing. Did we succeed? Well, you’ll have to watch the programme and find out, but we had a great time and the Buy It Now crew were fantastic. We loved every second.”

The team at Solar Buddies have won numerous product and business awards and are being mentored by former CEO and founder of Gocompare.com, Hayley Parsons OBE, who has also invested in the company. Kelli and Laura hope that their debut television appearance will introduce more parents to their innovative product and will help educate children and parents alike on sun safety.
