A Cardiff pizzeria which champions the ‘Slow Food’ ethos has been shortlisted for a national award which recognises exceptional commitment to sustainable practices.

Dusty Knuckle restaurant in Canton has been shortlisted for the ‘people’s favourite’ award in the Sustainable Restaurant Association’s ‘Food Made Good Awards’ 2018.

Hundreds of sustainable eateries were nominated by members of the public. A team of judges then chose the three businesses who they thought did the most to champion local producers, reduce waste and support their local community.

The overall winner will next be decided by public vote – but competition is fierce; also in the final three is the Michelin Star Black Swan restaurant in Yorkshire, and the hugely popular Breakfast Club diner in Soho, London.

Though all three restaurants are very different in style, they all share a common ethos; to serve food that does good as well as tastes good.

Dusty Knuckle owner Phill Lewis said he was shocked but thrilled to have been shortlisted for the award. He explained:

“My wife and I quit our jobs to start a business that would encourage people to start asking questions about how their food is made and where it comes from. Just three and half years later and that effort is being recognised and sees us in the running with two other incredible restaurants – one with a Michelin star, no less! Of course, we hope people will get behind us and vote for us, but whether we win this award or not, we’re just thrilled to have made the shortlist and to be championing sustainable food in Wales on a national scale.”
