The final set of restoration works at the historic Newport Market Arcade begins this week.
The restoration project, which began back in 2018, has seen the council transform the once declining arcade into a vibrant and viable commercial attraction within the city centre.
Located next to Newport Market and on High Street, the arcade has occupied an important spot right at the heart of the city centre for generations.
The work will see internal refurbishments to several of the units in the arcade, as well as the remaining external refurbishments.
The internal refurbishments will include replacing floors, walls and ceilings within a number of units to help bring out the historic character.
The external elements of the work will be on the High Street end of the arcade, and will see the units at 12-13 High Street refurbished to the same high standard and appearance as the rest of the arcade.
Victorian tiling will also be installed which again mirrors that of the rest of the arcade site.
Anthony A Davies Ltd, who have been principal contractors throughout the restoration project, will carry out this work. They will once again be supported by Davies Sutton Architects, who are specialists on working in listed buildings.
The transformation of the Market Arcade wouldn’t have been possible without the generous support of the National Lottery Heritage Fund, CADW and Welsh Government’s Transforming Towns fund.
Funding from the NLHF has helped us restore the arcade, which is Newport’s oldest surviving arcade and the second oldest in Wales.
Plaques have been installed at either end of the Arcade to mark this support, with the continued support allowing us to run activities and events in our pop-up heritage centre in Unit 14 and to manage and maintain the site in future years.
