Fire crews from across South Wales are currently responding to an incident involving a bulk carrier at Newport Docks.
At 05:38 this morning, South Wales Fire and Rescue Service arrived at the scene of a fire on board the vessel Nord Houston, which was docked at the port and carrying approximately 1,000 tonnes of scrap metal.

A significant number of resources have been deployed, including five pumping appliances, two hydraulic aerial platforms, and a range of specialist units. Firefighters are carrying out external firefighting operations using multiple main jets and an aerial ladder platform, with fire service boats in attendance to support water safety operations.

A drone unit has been deployed to provide enhanced situational awareness, allowing crews to monitor fire development and identify any hotspots.

The fire is currently surrounded, and tactics are being continuously reviewed to bring the incident to a safe and timely conclusion.

There is no immediate risk to life or to surrounding properties. South Wales Fire and Rescue Service is working closely with partner agencies, including Associated British Ports, harbour authorities, Natural Resources Wales, the police and the local authority, to ensure public safety and to assess and mitigate any potential environmental impact.

Crews are expected to remain on scene while arrangements are progressed to unload the affected cargo.

Members of the public are advised to avoid the dock area where possible and to allow emergency services to carry out their work.
