Plans to redevelop and revitalise a council housing estate in the city have been unveiled.
Residents at the Channel View estate in Grangetown have been given the first glimpse of the council’s plans to regenerate the area to provide a more attractive local community and help address the need for more affordable housing in the city.
The plans include the development of around 360 new homes, creating a more pleasant public realm and improving connectivity to the bay and city centre for people living in the area. The proposal also includes a new sheltered housing scheme which could provide a hub from which to deliver older person services.
Cabinet Member for Housing and Communities, Cllr Lynda Thorne, said:
“We have an exciting opportunity to redevelop the Channel View estate to deliver more quality social housing in the city and create an improved environment for residents.
“A review last year identified a number of issues with the current estate including structural movement in the houses and flats, a poor bus route, poor design of the existing estate and a low quality public realm.
“Our plans are at an early stage and we want to work with the existing community to ensure they are involved in the regeneration of the estate which will deliver a good mix of private houses and apartments for sale as well as new council homes in the area.”
The ambitious plans are part of the Council’s work to increase the amount of social housing in the city to meet the very high demand. The authority has a target of delivering 2,000 new homes in Cardiff, 1,000 of which will be completed by 2022.
The Channel View plans would see the number of homes on the estate almost double from the current total of 184 properties, as well as the creation of more three and four-bedroom family homes which are in high demand in the city.
Cllr Thorne said:
“The Channel View estate regeneration is ambitious and part of our vision to not only tackle the pressures to provide decent homes for the people who need them but also to create more sustainable and better connected communities across the city.”
Early consultation has taken place with residents whose views will now be considered. If the Council decided to proceed with plans, further work and consultation will be carried out ahead of a report to Cabinet.
