Mermaid Quay, the top dining & leisure destination on the waterfront in the heart of Cardiff Bay, is set to undergo a comprehensive refurbishment.
The popular centre, which will celebrate its 20th anniversary next year, has welcomed over 100 million visitors since it opened in 1999.
Planning and other relevant applications for a broad package of public realm works have now been submitted to Cardiff City Council as part of a wider strategy of improvements. Subject to consents being granted, the centre owners – Schroder UK Real Estate Fund – hope to implement the plans in phases over the next few years.
Work on elements of the redecoration, which does not require planning consent, is due to start later this month (May 2018).
In addition to extensive redecoration and new wall finishes, the plans envisage new paving, lighting, landscaping, signage and wayfinding, entrance markers, seating and street furniture throughout the 150,000 sq ft centre.
The plans will transform the appearance of Mermaid Quay, creating a contemporary dockside feel in keeping with its stunning waterfront location and ensuring that the centre retains its status as one of the most popular leisure locations in Wales. This approach is in line with Cardiff Council’s ambitious vision for the future of Cardiff Bay.
A key element of the proposals is the creation of a stylish new landscaped public space in Tacoma Square, right at the heart of Mermaid Quay overlooking Cardiff Bay. This will provide a fantastic new location for the centre’s extensive programme of events and entertainment as well as area where people sit and enjoy the waterfront.
The plans also include exciting new lighting treatments to the underside of the bridge that spans Bute Street and to the iconic clock tower – celebrating the life and achievements of aviation pioneer Captain Ernest Willows – overlooking Tacoma Square.

The planned transformation will refresh the customer experience and maximise our stunning location. I can’t wait.”
- The designs for the revamp have been created by award-winning retail design experts Rawls, supported by JLL’s building consultancy team.
