The Caerphilly Early Years and Childcare Service is delighted to announce that the Flying Start childcare programme is expanding to include more postcode areas across Caerphilly County Borough. This latest phase of the Welsh Government’s national rollout means even more families will be able to access high-quality childcare from January 2026. This expansion marks a significant milestone, increasing coverage from 50% to 80% of the borough — bringing the benefits of Flying Start to hundreds more children and their families.

From the 1st September 2025, families in newly eligible areas will be able to apply for a Flying Start childcare place, with successful applicants beginning their funded placement in January 2026. This expansion reflects the council’s ongoing commitment to supporting children’s early development and helping families access vital early years services.

Flying Start offers 12.5 hours per week of funded part-time childcare during term time for children aged 2 to 3, delivered through approved local providers. Including childminders, day nurseries and playgroups.

Cllr Carol Andrews, Cabinet Member for Education and Communities, said:

“We’re proud to be expanding Flying Start Childcare to even more areas across the borough. These early years are essential for a child’s development, and this programme gives both children and families the strong start they deserve. I’d urge all families in the new postcodes to check if they’re eligible and be ready to apply from the 1st of September.”

Families can now use our postcode checker to see whether they live in one of the newly eligible postcodes . For more information, visit our website: www.caerphillyearlyyears.co.uk/childcare/flying-start-funded-childcare/
