Former Cardiff Blues Senior Performance coach moves to full-time role at Sam Warburton’s Academy

Chris Tombs, the former Cardiff Blues Senior Performance coach, has moved into a full-time role at Sam Warburton’s SW7 Academy.

Chris, who has over 28 years’ experience as a Strength and Conditioning coach, will continue his work with a team of experts at SW7, who provide elite level training to help maximise athletic performance through advanced S&C programmes.

He has previously worked with England Women’s Rugby, Leicester Tigers and Northamptonshire County Cricket Club, and has extensive experience of working overseas with the USA Women’s and Men’s 7s and 15s Rugby teams, as well as a Performance Consultant with the Seattle Seawolves.

Chris said: “SW7 is an amazing team, and we have lots of exciting projects coming up which I can’t wait to be a part of. Since starting here, I’ve worked with some great athletes and teams providing a different range of strength and conditioning programmes and I’m looking forward to continuing this on a full-time basis.”

“As a Strength and Conditioning coach, my main emphasis has always been on implementing a comprehensive and instructive method to facilitate the growth and progress of athletes and players at all levels, and SW7 Academy has allowed me to continue to do this.”

SW7 Academy was set up in 2019 by former Wales and British and Irish Lions captain, Sam Warburton, and his business partner Josh Davies, and is an online training platform created to help maximise athletic performance through advanced strength and conditioning programmes for individuals who wish to lose weight, gain muscle or improve their athletic performance.

Sam and Josh identified a space in the market for athletes competing at all levels and in all kinds of sporting environments to gain access to elite level coaching and expertise normally reserved for professionals.

Given his experience, Chris was the perfect fit to deliver the level of coaching required and, having previously combined his role at SW7 with other commitments, is now joining the team in a full-time capacity as Head of Performance.

Sam Warburton, said: “Chris has such a strong track record when it comes to supporting player development from academy level right through to world-class performance, so when it came to the development of SW7 Academy as a training platform offering elite level coaching support on a wider scale, he was the only choice.”

“I can say from personal experience both during my time as a professional sportsperson and as someone working to improve on my own athletic performance on a daily basis that Chris’ approach to Strength and Conditioning training is as adaptable as it is effective. We’re absolutely delighted to be in a position to welcome Chris on to the SW7 team in a full-time capacity, therefore, as we continue working to make elite level training programmes accessible to as many people as we can.”
