Newport Live’s Community Sport & Wellbeing Team launched free Pop Up Sport events for children, young people and families last summer, and this year’s Pop Up Sport events are set to be a huge hit again. The community-focused family events will run over the school holidays, alongside the popular Sport in the Park series and other holiday activities for kids, which span both sports and the arts.
The series of events will be delivered at parks and open spaces in Newport with a wide range of free fun sport and physical activities on offer for children aged 3 – 14 years. Healthy snacks, fruit and water will be provided, supporting Newport families during the holidays as part of the national holiday hunger campaign.
“We piloted our FREE Pop Up Sport Events last year after the COVID regulations and rules were easing and they proved to be a great success. Utilising local green spaces and school facilities we were able to break down many barriers to participation in sport and physical activity for children and families. We are also able to support tackle holiday hunger by providing the children with healthy packed lunches, fruit, and water alongside being active and having fun with their families and friends.” explained Chloe Powton, Community Sport and Physical Activity Development Manager. The Pop Up Sport events perfectly complement Newport Lives already ambitious plans for the summer, made possible thanks to funding from the Welsh Government Summer of Fun fund.

The engagement and activities being provided by Newport Live over the summer, compliments year-round work to increase children, young people, and adult’s levels of physical activity, engagement in the arts, and improve their mental and emotional wellbeing. Funding received from Sport Wales, Newport City Council, Arts Council of Wales, and the Office of the Police & Crime Commissioner for Gwent and other partners and stakeholders have enabled the teams across Newport Live’s Teams to enjoy activities across sport, leisure, theatre, arts and culture to deliver activities to support physical and mental wellbeing and activities, to keep young people inspired, and to support families that need assistance.
