Bridgend County Borough Council will receive £50,000 from Welsh Government for repairs to the Rest Bay boardwalk in Porthcawl after it was damaged during Storm Dennis last year.

It’s part of a package of more than £21.5m announced by Welsh Government to help local authorities across the country fix flood damage to roads, bridges and boardwalks.

During Storm Dennis in February 2020, strong winds and rain in the area eroded a section of ground from underneath the boardwalk at Rest Bay in Porthcawl.

The boardwalk has been safe to walk over but contractors are currently carrying out works nearby and underneath to stabilise it, as well as protecting other areas from similar erosion.

Housing and Local Government Minister Julie James said: “One year on from Storm Dennis, councils are continuing to repair the serious flood damage to roads, bridges, pavements and walls.

“After our initial emergency response, we have been supporting them to carry out this ongoing repair work, which included work that needed to be done before the start of this winter to prevent further damage. I am pleased to see this funding is making a difference in communities across Wales.”

Many thanks to Welsh Government for this funding which will help the council restore this much-loved attraction at Rest Bay in Porthcawl, which is well used by residents and visitors.

Made from environmentally-sustainable robust recycled plastic, the 1.3km-long boardwalk links Rest Bay with Sker Point.

The boardwalk is closed temporarily until these works are completed.
