Fundraisers pull on their walking boots for Pencoed Walk for Life

The Kidney Wales Walk for Life is set to hit Pencoed this weekend, as local fundraisers lace-up their walking boots in a bid to raise valuable funds for the charity.

Taking place on Sunday 17th, the walk will begin at the Pencoed Social Club before setting off around Pencoed for a family friendly 5K walk, followed by refreshments provided by the social club and a raffle.

Samantha’s son Barney has been a benefactor of Kidney Wales’ support

The walk is set to begin at 11am, with walkers being urged to arrive for 10:30am to ensure that they have plenty of time to register.

The Pencoed walk is organised by the Kidney Wales Head of Finance, Samantha Meredith, whose involvement in the charity derives from her son Barney’s battle with kidney disease.

Barney was born with PUV (Posterior Urethral Valves), a condition that effects kidney functionality and will likely result in him requiring a kidney transplant in the future.

Despite his young age, Barney himself has also contributed to raising awareness Kidney Wales’ cause – having been the face of the charity’s 2017 campaign.

Speaking on the upcoming walk, Samantha said:

“It’s incredibly uplifting to see people from the community give up their own time to raise money and spread awareness for Kidney Wales.

“Having experienced the great work that the charity does first hand – not only through my position in Kidney Wales but also through the support given to Barney – I know just how important these fundraising walks are.

“Plenty of work has gone into making this walk happen and we cannot wait for the weekend to come around as it’s a fun day that helps raise money as well as awareness for the Charity.”

Amongst other activities, funds raised by Kidney Wales pay for play therapists for children like Barney to be entertained while they have their bloods checked and provide support workers for affected families.
