Green light for next stage of exciting 21st Century school plans

Caerphilly County Borough Council

Ambitious plans to progress two flagship school proposals in the Caerphilly county borough took a major step forward yesterday (Wednesday 9th Dec) following Cabinet’s agreement to proceed to the next phase of the statutory process.

The council has submitted a bid to Welsh Government as part of its ‘21st Century Schools Band B’ programme for two exciting schemes:

  • Trinity Fields School in Ystrad Mynach – The expansion of the existing Trinity Fields School and Resource Centre with a new building extension and outdoor play space
  • Ysgol Gymraeg Cwm Gwyddon in Cwmcarn – The relocation and expansion of the school to a new purpose-built Welsh medium school to be situated on the vacant site of the former Cwmcarn High School

The plans were recently subject to a formal consultation and the Cabinet was asked to consider the responses and decide whether to proceed to the next stage in the process, which involves the publication of a Statutory Notice about the council’s intent to progress the plans.

Cllr Ross Whiting, Cabinet Member for Education said, “This is fantastic news and marks another milestone in the delivery of our successful 21st Century School programme. We have an excellent track record of delivering outstanding 21st Century school projects over recent years, with £56million already invested as part of the Band A programme. I have no doubt that these new proposals under Band B will help raise the bar even further.”

Leader of Council, Cllr Philippa Marsden added, “These ambitious plans to enhance our flagship special school for some of our most vulnerable learners, as well as the creation of a state-of-the-art new Welsh medium school in Cwmcarn, have taken a significant step forward and we look forward to progressing to the next phase in the process. Pupils and parents alike will no doubt welcome the positive progress that is being made on these schemes.”

The 21st Century Schools Programme is a collaboration between Welsh Government and local councils. It is a significant, long-term and strategic capital investment programme with the aim of creating a generation of 21st Century Schools in Wales.
