Glan Llyn Primary School in Newport has received a donation of hi-vis jackets from Bellway Wales which will help children learn about construction.

The school, off Bessemer Drive, opened in September 2019 and forms part of the new community which is taking shape on part of the former Llanwern steelworks site to the east of Newport. It lies opposite Bellway’s Heron’s Mead development.

The jackets will be used by the pupils when they are using construction materials in special construction areas which have been set up in each class.

Glan Llyn Primary School’s Deputy Headteacher, Stephanie King, said: “We are delighted about this donation from Bellway as the school has areas within each classroom dedicated to construction play, where children can experiment with construction materials.

“I am sure the children will really benefit from these hi-vis jackets when using these areas and also when we plan outdoor activities. The children will also benefit from wearing them within the local community whenever we go on longer walks outside school.”

Bellway has been delivering new housing on the former Llanwern steelworks site since 2016 and is currently building 152 new homes at Heron’s Mead.

Rhodri Davies, Sales Manager for Bellway Wales, said: “With Glan Llyn Primary School being part of the new neighbourhood where we are building new homes, we are happy that we have been able to help them with the donation of these hi-vis jackets.

“We hope that the donation will make a difference to the children’s practical learning experience within the classroom construction areas.

“It is really encouraging to see that the pupils are developing their design, planning, and team-working skills through the school’s focus on construction.”
