High winds force temporary closure of M48 Severn Bridge

The M48 Severn Bridge has been closed in both directions this afternoon due to strong winds.

Traffic Wales confirmed at 13:28 that the road had reopened following the earlier safety closure. The bridge had been shut to traffic in both directions as a precaution because of high winds sweeping across the crossing.

During the closure, motorists were diverted via the Prince of Wales Bridge.

The Severn Bridge is particularly exposed to severe weather conditions, and closures are sometimes put in place to protect drivers when wind speeds reach unsafe levels.

Drivers travelling between South Wales and the South West of England are advised to check for the latest traffic updates before setting off, especially during periods of unsettled weather.
