UKSE’s Community Fund has hit the target with its support for FIRE  in South Wales.

FIRE, run by volunteers, gives home-educated young people a weekly break from their studies allowing them to socialise and relax.

The weekly sessions are held at the Folly View Community Centre near Pontypool. Up to 20 young people between eight and sixteen from around South Wales attend each week, making new friends and enjoying a range of activities and sports.

Chair Cherie Rosser underlined the importance of the sessions to the young people. “It is a place for them to come and gives them a break each week and helps build friendships and confidence,” she said.

“We are very grateful to UKSE’s Community fund for the £1400 donation that has been made and it helps us offer more and better activities to the young people.”

The money was used to buy archery equipment and an indoor crazy golf set, as well as other equipment, and these are very popular.

UKSE , a subsidiary of Tata Steel, set up its Community Fund to support local communities and organisations such as FIRE which underpin the fabric of society and are often run by public spirited volunteers.

“We are delighted to help this wonderful initiative supporting young people who are educated at home. It has broadened the scope of what FIRE can offer each week, and it is good to see it being used with such enthusiasm,” said Jake Walters UKSE Workspace Co-ordinator.

As well as working to support local communities, UKSE offers flexible workspace and provides loans and equity finance up to £1.5 million to companies with the potential to create lasting, quality jobs.
