Homelessness charity appeals for volunteers in Porthcawl shop

Homelessness charity Emmaus South Wales is appealing for volunteers to help in its Porthcawl charity shop.

Emmaus South Wales provides accommodation, work experience, daily support, and funded training to help people who have experienced homelessness.

Volunteers are currently needed to help in the charity’s Porthcawl shop in several roles including till work, sorting and stocking donations, cleaning, and customer service. Emmaus can accommodate as many days or hours people have spare, however asks that volunteers are consistent and reliable.

Adam Merrison, Porthcawl Operations Manager at Emmaus South Wales, said:

“We’re looking for people who want to use their time, skills, and passion to drive our charity forward and make a real difference to the lives of people who have been homeless. Volunteering with us is a great way to meet new people, get involved with the local community, and learn new skills. No two days at the Emmaus South Wales shops are the same and we can promise a fun and rewarding volunteer experience in our Porthcawl shop.”

The charity runs four second-hand shops in Bridgend, Porthcawl, and Maesteg, and operates Porthcawl’s land train service. All proceeds from the sale of donated items and the land train goes directly back into the charity and helps to support people out of homelessness.

Lynne Morgan started volunteering at Emmaus South Wales after her partner passed away and has helped in the charity’s Porthcawl shop for six years. Lynne said:

“Volunteering at Emmaus is a win-win. After losing my partner, volunteering opened up a whole new aspect of my life and I’ve made so many new friends. In the Porthcawl shop, I help sort all the clothing donations a couple of times a week and love it. We get fantastic donations and there’s always something to do.

“It’s so rewarding as well because at Emmaus you get to see first-hand where your work and the money from the shops is going. My daughter and niece even volunteer with me when they visit! To anyone thinking about volunteering at Emmaus, I’d say give it a go! In the past, we’ve had people come in to hoover or clean the kitchen area, so it really can be flexible depending on the amount of the time you have spare.”

The Emmaus South Wales shop in Porthcawl is located at 36-38 New Road, CF36 5DN. To enquire about volunteering, contact the charity on [email protected] or call 01656 750829.
