The High Sheriff of South Glamorgan, Janey Howell, has chosen City Hospice as her charity of the year.
Janey, who is originally from Antigua, is the High Sheriff of South Glamorgan for 2024 to 2025. The High Sheriff is the monarch’s judicial representative in the county and is the oldest secular Office in the United Kingdom after the Crown.
In addition to responsibilities such as attending royal visits, ensuring the wellbeing and protection of high court judges and acting as the returning officer for parliamentary elections in the county, High Sheriffs are encouraged to use their year in office to make a difference and raise the profile of local charities and community foundations.
City Hospice, Janey Howell’s charity of the year, is the only provider of home-based specialist palliative care in the capital. The charity provides care and services including welfare advice and complementary therapies to patients with terminal or life limiting illnesses, as well as bereavement support and counselling for the families of its patients.
Janey said: “Often the worry over the family you are leaving behind is huge. Knowing there is someone who will be there for your loved ones gives you a huge sense of relief.
“When visiting City Hospice, I was inspired by the passion the team shared in caring for their patients and families. I am delighted to support the charity’s important work and thrilled to be a part of their 40th anniversary year.”

Outside of the Office of High Sheriff, Janey is the Joint Managing Director of BCB International, a manufacturer of life-saving equipment for the global defence markets. The Cardiff-based business is taking part in City Hospice’s 40 Charity Challenge, turning £40 into a minimum of £1600 for the charity through creative and innovative fundraising.
