A charity day held by Bellway Wales has raised over £3,000 for Cancer Research UK.

The housebuilder hosted the event for staff at its divisional office in Cardiff, as well as some of its developments across the region, in support of its nominated national charity.

The fundraiser formed part of Bellway’s ‘3 for 23’ campaign, which is aiming to raise over £3 million for Cancer Research UK by the end of 2023.

Staff paid for the privilege of being able to throw wet sponges at the company’s directors, who were put in a set of stocks built by one of the housebuilder’s carpenters.

There were also brownie sales and a raffle featuring prizes such as one week’s annual leave, a 43-inch television, and a wine hamper.

A total of £1,011.50 was raised on the day, with Bellway triple-matching the sum to bring the final figure to £3,034.50.

Andy Backhouse, Managing Director for Bellway Wales, said: “We were keen to host this fundraiser as part of our ‘3 for 23’ campaign while at the same time putting on a fun-packed day for our hard-working and dedicated members of staff.

“We have a long-standing relationship with Cancer Research UK, having raised over £1.95 million for the charity through various activities since 2016. It was great to see our employees getting into the spirit of things and doing their bit to raise money for our nominated charity.

“Even though I may have taken more sponges to the face than I initially bargained for, going in the stocks was all part of the fun and well worth doing to support such a vital cause. I’d like to thank all of our staff members who took part, as well as our contractors who kindly donated raffle prizes.”
