Today, storage units play a crucial role in our daily lives. With the help of storage units, we get to store off-season or lesser-used belongings there. This helps us better organize our living space and makes life much easier.

To store your belongings in a storage unit, all you need to do is just follow a few steps. You need to first do a little research, choose one of the best self-storage facilities, and rent self-storage units in that facility as per your needs and budget.

Even though you are done storing your belongings in your rented unit, you’re required to check in on your belongings. Most people stay confused wondering how often they need to check on their storage unit. If you’re also having the same issue, then this guide is for you. Read on.

Generally, it is recommended to visit your storage unit once every month or two. To be more precise, the need to visit the units relies on several factors. These factors can help you to accurately determine the frequency of visits required to your storage facility.

Here are some questions you can ask yourself to know How Often Should You Check on Your Storage Unit:

What Safety & Security Measures Does Your Facility Offer?

You won’t have to invest your time and efforts to check on your belongings too often if you’ve rented units in a good storage facility. We say so because with a good storage facility comes comfort and peace of mind.

It’s because you’ll be knowing that your belongings are in a safe and secured place. Knowing that everything is in place can make a huge difference when it comes to the number of times you need to check on your unit.

We emphasize so much on the choice of storage facility because a good storage facility comes with a lot of safety and security measures. A good facility offers you features such as round-the-clock CCTV surveillance, electronic gate access, climate-controlled units, fencing, etc. Some facilities even have on-site management for enhanced security and convenience.

If you didn’t opt for a good storage facility, you most probably may have to pop in thrice or even more a month. You may need to drive to your unit just to know your belongings are in the same condition in which you left them. In the end, it all comes to what kind of storage facility you’re storing your belongings in.

What Has The Weather Been Like?

Despite storing your belongings in a good storage facility, you might still have to visit your unit often. You need to do so when there are extreme weather conditions. In most cases, climate-controlled units can save you from mild weather changes like a rise in humidity. But, these special units may even fail if there are any severe changes in weather. There are times when mother nature gets angry and doesn’t cooperate.

You should know you need to visit your units when there’s any significant change in weather in the area of your storage facility. We would suggest you check on your storage unit when there’s an earthquake, major rainfall, severe thunderstorms, serious storms, snowfall, etc. You may need to keep a close eye on your unit if it’s located near water. You need not drive to your unit if the weather wasn’t bad enough to damage your belongings within facility infrastructure.

What Kind Of Belongings Are You Storing?

The nature of your belongings comes into play when determining how often to visit your storage unit. Delicate and high-priced items in your storage unit require more visits than other items.

We often use units to store items such as electronics, jewelry, heirlooms, important documents, etc. Also, there are items that are prone to damage like artwork, antiques, etc. As these items are perishable, valuable, and high-priced, they are vulnerable to damage and theft. Hence, it’s a good idea to check in regular intervals to ensure everything is the same and well-preserved. Well, again if you have opted for a good storage facility the number of visits might go down a bit.

Usually, most of the storage facilities out there offer insurance for their units. We would suggest you go for these insurances if your budget allows. But, despite all these visiting your storage unit once a month remains constant. It’s because you need to know there was a problem in the first place to file a claim for insurance.

    How Is The Packing?

Last but not least, visit to your self-storage units also depends on how your belongings are packed. Proper packing will go a long way towards keeping your belongings stay safe and protected from any damage.

No matter how good is your packing, we would suggest you not ever store items like food, dangerous chemicals, etc in your unit. One more thing you should take care of is not to stack boxes containing valuable items on the ceiling. If you want to stack your belongings on top of each other, make sure to use sturdy boxes of similar or equal size.

Packing and organizing your items in the units will prevent the risk of damage for anyone helping move the items in and out. Also, leaving spaces between the packages inside your unit will make your visits safe, easy, and efficient. All these will give you peace of mind and will reduce the need for checking your units often.

    Conclusion

With that, we come to the end of our guide. Hopefully, now you’ll not face any trouble deciding when and how often you need to be visiting your storage units. Make sure you keep checking our space for more such storage-related guides.
