Artificial intelligence (AI) is one of the most exciting areas of computer science. Concerned with creating systems and software capable of analysing data and coming to conclusions, this field has been responsible for some of the most interesting technological innovations in recent years. From manufacturing robots to tools that can identify our emotions and self-driving cars, the possibilities are endless for AI.

It’s predicted that artificial intelligence will soon be present in most industries around the world, helping to change how we work and make our lives easier. Because of the potential it has to change the world, lots of people are now interested in studying AI. As a growing technology, getting your education in AI could be an excellent way of ensuring you’ll always have job opportunities in the future.

Not only is there a growing demand for those who are qualified and experienced in AI, but it’s also an incredibly exciting field to work in. New innovations are developed each year, and you could be at the forefront of research that changes the world. If you’re looking to get into a career in AI, you’ll need to follow these steps.

    Studying AI

As with most subjects, study and qualifications are important for getting your career started. Most positions in the field of AI require a degree or similar level of education in AI, machine learning or computer science. Some roles may even require a master’s or doctorate, but getting your degree is the first step. Although you may choose the traditional method of studying for a degree in university, online courses are also an option.

Artificial intelligence courses available online can provide an excellent start to your education in AI and can be done alongside another degree. If you’ve already been to university and would like to change your career path or just a new speciality, studying AI online is a great way to do so. You get more flexibility with online courses and can choose a course that contains modules that interest you.

    Skills You Need in AI

Aside from completing your education, it’s also necessary to consider the skills you need to succeed. There are many different roles available in the field of AI, including data analyst, data scientist, AI operations and more. Each role requires a different set of skills, and you’ll need to consider these before you start applying for roles.

Programming is a useful skill for any role in AI, with languages such as Python and C++ being the most common. Other languages that may be useful depending on the role include R, Haskell and MATLAB. You can learn most programming languages online and there are plenty of free resources you can use.

Other skills that are important in AI include teamwork, communication and problem-solving. You’ll also need to be creative and have a keen passion for AI. Passion is helpful as it will mean you’re more interested in learning and developing new techniques.

    Gaining Experience in AI

Before you find your first job in AI, you may need to get experience first. The best way to do this is by working on personal projects and developing your own portfolio. Choose a topic that interests you and is relevant to the area of AI you want to work in, and then start working on your own project. You can come up with a hypothesis and test it or create your own AI tool using coding.

Make use of GitHub to find other projects and publish your own once it’s complete. You can also write about your project and any conclusions you’re able to make from it. Showing this to potential employers can boost your chances of getting a job.
