More than 470 people took part in a charity walk at Pontcanna Fields, Cardiff, at the weekend (Sunday 21 July) to raise vital funds and awareness for Alzheimer’s Research UK.

People gathered in the Grade II listed historic parkland as part of the UK’s leading dementia research charity’s final Walk For A Cure event of 2024, and raised over £35,800.

This is the second year the charity has hosted Walk For A Cure, but it is the first time the family-friendly event has come to Cardiff. Walk For A Cure is a series of 5km fundraising walks across the UK, and in addition to Cardiff, took place in London, Edinburgh, Southampton, Liverpool and Nottinghamshire this summer.

So far, the money raised at the Cardiff event has helped take the series total to over £275,000 for Alzheimer’s Research UK, with donations still coming in.

These walks aim to bring together families impacted by dementia, alongside the researchers working hard to find a cure for the condition.

Julia Sobik, Head of Sporting Events and Volunteering at Alzheimer’s Research UK, said:

“A big thank you to everyone who attended Walk For A Cure at Pontcanna Fields at the weekend. It was fantastic to be able to bring the event to Cardiff and see so many people come together to support Alzheimer’s Research UK and our search for a cure for dementia.

“Cardiff marked the final Walk For A Cure event for this year, and we’re incredibly proud of the series’ success over the summer. Thanks to your support, we have raised over £35,000, which is a fantastic amount. This will help fund life-changing dementia research, taking us even closer to a cure for dementia.

“Thank you to everyone who has attended an event over the summer, and to our amazing volunteers who have helped make them happen. We can’t wait to see where Walk For A Cure takes us next!”

The Perfume Shop, a partner of Alzheimer’s Research UK since 2014, supported the event in the heart of the city, with 25 employees taking part through walking, fundraising, and volunteering in Cardiff.

Gill Smith, Managing Director at The Perfume Shop, said:

“We were delighted to join Alzheimer’s Research UK at Cardiff for its Walk For A Cure event at the weekend. Our team were proud to join the 472 people who took part, with TPS People joining from across our sites and head office. It was made extra special with the team bringing our pop-up Perfume Shop, ‘Vera Van,’ along to the event village with some fundraising games!

“We set ourselves a goal to raise £1,500 and I am thrilled that we have surpassed this, raising a fantastic £2,683 in total across the Cardiff, Liverpool, and Edinburgh events. We are proud to continue to stand with Alzheimer’s Research UK, for a cure for dementia.”
